Professeur Clément-Claude ABBOU
Head of Department - Service d'Urologie

Recent progresses in urology resulted in developing the so-called minimally invasive surgery which does not involve a cutaneous opening at all or only limited incisions. Within this framework, laparoscopic surgery meets a development in the majority of surgical fields. In urology, the most complex techniques have been performed and are currently used routinely.
The rationale of laparoscopic techniques is now well established. Thanks to highly performant video systems and image magnification, surgical tasks are much more precise and thus of greater quality. Postoperative course is faster as well as return to normal activity. The pain is definitely less important than after open surgery, blood transfusion became exceptional. Laparoscopic surgery in urology avoids large incisions an more specifically the section of the muscles. There are no more important scars and the infectious risk is clearly decreased.
It is for all these reasons that since 10 year the team of the department developed and implemented laparoscopic surgery in all fields of urology.

  • Tumours and certain renal anomalies are treated routinely by this surgery.
  • The treatment of prostate cancer received an impulse thanks to laparoscopic surgery. This impulse stemed from France and expanded to the whole world thanks to the results and demonstrations of our teams.
  • Laparoscopic surgery also served as a ground for the development of robotic surgery in urology, in which our department has also been one of the leaders at an international level.

The Department of Urology of Henri Mondor Hospital has developed his axes of excellence in onco-urology in the fields of research, the managment and early diagnosis of cancers of the prostate, the bladder, the kidney and the testicle.

The basic research unit is one of the specificities of our department. We belong to those urology departments in France whose research activity is recognized by the EPST. Two groups are thus made up:

  • L’EMI 03-37 of l’INSERM (Oncogenesis of respiratory and urogenital tumors) and
  • The surgical research lab of Henri Mondor Hospital: "Surgical techniques and sciences"
  • This group aims to develop the techniques of tissue engineering and cellular therapies for the functional urologic surgery and of rebuilding of the urinary tract. It also evaluates the new techniques of simulation and surgical robotics.

This early diagnosis of the urologic tumours leads to perfectly regulated and standardized investigations by a medical and nurse staff trained in this respect.

Post-operative follow-up of the tumours is dealt with with much attention according to well identified parameters and a pre-established rate of monitoring that are announced in advance to the patient.

The treatment and follow-up of the patients with bladder tumours are under the responsibility for Doctor VORDOS and Doctor LARRE. The importance of this activity is explained by the propensity of these tumours to recurr and to worsen without appropriate treatment.

The evaluation of the results is conducted by Doctor SALOMON, using self-questionnaires which the patient systematically sends according to a quite precise protocol.

Renal and pancreatic transplantation is a field of excellence of the Department of Urology of the Henri Mondor hospital. This activity is coordinated by Doctor SALOMON in collaboration with the Department of Nephrology directed by Professor LANG.

The surgery of urinary stone disease is dealt with by Doctor HOZNEK. We have a last generation lithotriptor which makes it possible to destroy urinary stones. In certain cases stones are treated either by endoscopic or by percutaneous route. The last technological advancement in this field is flexible ureteroscopy which makes it possible to destroy stones in situ with the help of holmium: yag laser.

Male and female urinary incontinence is a field wich requires for the diagnosis a coordination of complementary examinations including uro-dynamics. This is followed by the choice of the best treatment. Doctor YIOU is responsible of this unit, he developed his research activity in Harvard in the United States during two years. He initiated the first clinical trial for the treatment of incontinence by direct implantation of muscular precursor cells.

Sexual problems of the man and the woman are also dealt with by Doctor YIOU who has, at his disposal a certain number of examinations and the therapeutic tools which enable him to establish a precise diagnosis and the best treatment.

Finally, during the last few years our knowledge of benign prostatic hyperplasia has considerably developped especially concerning medical treatment. Surgical treatments are applied only to a limited number of patients. This domain is coordinated by Professor de la TAILLE.

In this web-site the different chapiters will be reported by the persons in charge in order to familiarize the reader with our methods of diagnosis, treatment and research. Furthermore the objective of the site is to inform patients regarding our surgical techniques and to present our medical training methods.
